Over the last few years, I have worked on a series of abstract paintings using calligraphic markings over grounds of intense color. I start by preparing wooden panels with an absorbent gesso and then layer thin washes of color to saturate the surface. The fluidity of the paint becomes an integral part of the process. When the ground is complete, various black and white calligraphic marks are applied as a linear framework in contrast to the atmospheric color beneath.
In this series of work, Gravity Suspended and the Wedgwood Series, decorative motifs are derived from Islamic miniatures, the natural world, jewelry, and silhouettes. These paintings describe an amorphous location, a world without horizon where land and sea merge: or, a perceptual dislocation between where one thing begins and another ends. Other paintings allude to a state of weightlessness: floating, flying, and most particularly, dreaming, free from the constraints of gravity.
